League of Nations and UN
Any effort towards world's peace should be appreciated, and this is certainly a welcome change.
There are certain concerns about this peace talk in Singapore unlike the Unification of Germany talks that happened in 1989-1990. Unlike the case of Germany, which included gradual migration and movement of people between East and West Germany that expedited the peace talks, and promoted multilateral diplomatic talks, this one is more bilateral in nature.
The multilateral nature of German talks was also connected to WWII events and geographic location.
The other aspect to consider is the need to involve the UN in this negotiation discussion at a center of the site in alignment with the UN's charter. One of the crucial reasons that led to WWII was the failure of the League of Nations. UN was formed to address and fill gaps that happened between WWI and WWII, eventually leading to the League of Nations failure. We don't want the same to happen again.
Though there are certainly concerns about the effectiveness of the UN in this 21st century, still it is one unique body that includes the involvement of the majority of the countries around the globe. Moreover, this bilateral talks most probably would come under the jurisdiction of International Humanitarian Law, Rule of Law, International Court of Justice to name a few, which would certainly call for explicit participation by UN.
